Flashback. It was a Tuesday, April 7th, 2015. Time flies when you are having fun! Especially when you are living on Maui. It’s been six years today, since the closing of this record-breaking sale of a unique Makena home. The property was built in 2011 and is located on an over four-acre parcel of land. The recorded sales price would show as $41,775,000.00. Nearly six months of unusual showings and negotiations. I am very thankful and will never forget any moment of this time period for the rest of my life!

This is Hamoa Beach in Hana. In my mind, Maui’s best beach. And for many reasons our prime location for a private relaxing escape. It’s Saturday, August 22nd, 2015. Almost five months after the record-breaking sale of the Makena home. The internet connection is pretty weak out here. But we are able to read today’s headline in The Maui News, reporting a quiet sale in Makena. According to the article, it recorded earlier this year and was never listed for sale. Later we learned there was a similar article around the same time in the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
When in Hana, we are usually staying at a little cottage somewhere above Hamoa Beach. Pretty much the view from the above photo. We are having our morning coffee on the lanai, enjoying the sound of the waves, while sharing the stories surrounding the springtime events.
I first sold this lot at the end of April in 2008 for $5,250,000.00. There was no house. It was a parcel of vacant land back then. After a series of events, I came close to listing the lot for sale in December of 2010. At that time, I did have a signed listing agreement. But I am sure glad that never happened. The most valuable memories are the hundreds of photos I took from this house in Makena for the previous owners on April 6th, 2015, only 24 hours prior to the recording of the sale. It was no longer fully decorated.

Reality hit when we came back home from Hana a few days later. It was interesting to listen to the stories from clients and read the solicitation letters from other Maui real estate agents. Assumptions and ideas, since hardly anyone had ever seen the house or knew about the sale from earlier this year. Dealing with the IRS and the tax consequences was a completely different event. But that’s not part of this story and doesn’t belong here.
The sale of this Makena home is certainly at the top of my Significant Sales list. It is the highest residential sale of a Maui home to date and probably also ranks in the top dozen for the state of Hawaii. And I am sure it will be like that for a while!
